Schools & Education

The behemoths of higher education in Michigan are about on either side of Detroit. University of Michigan is to the south in Ann Arbor and Michigan State University is in East Lansing to the northwest. Still, Detroit is home to a variety of colleges. And, like many big cities, its public education system has a mammoth battle to fight.

Wayne State University is located in the city, as are the University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College. The College for Creative Studies traces its roots to the Arts and Crafts movement, and today is an elite school known for its graduates in automotive design.

With about 145,000 students, the city school district has a formidable task of operating 232 school buildings from early childhood through adult education. Detroit has always had a strong collection of private schools as well.
