Housing
Since the 1967 riots, Detroit has been associated with the image of a city filled with boarded up homes. Many of those houses have been razed and, in some instances, new residences built in their place. There is a good deal of residential development under way with new apartments and town homes being developed. Detroit is fortunate to have a number of neighborhood development organizations taking on the task of creating affordable housing.
Ironically, the city that put America on wheels today faces the fact than many of its residents now live elsewhere. In many instances, they took their businesses with them. Detroit’s suburbs today are home to many people who work in the city, but also to a variety of businesses which left the city as well. Because of this, much of the growth and development that 30 years ago might have happened within Detroit’s city limits occurs in suburbs made possible by automobile travel.
