Attraction

Downtown Detroit has enjoyed a boom in nightlife since casino gambling was approved in 1996. Today, millions of visitors enjoy a variety of games, dining and live entertainment at three casinos: Greektown, MGM Grand and Motor City.

One of the under-appreciated attractions of the city is the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, located on Belle Isle in the Detroit River. The museum is rich in the history of this mammoth inland sea, and especially the boats and men and women who sailed them.

The Detroit Historical Museum chronicles and preserves the city’s history dating back to the 1700s when the French arrived. More of the city’s history is preserved at Historic Fort Wayne, the first American-built fort in this critical port city. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, is the largest on the topic in the U.S.

On the waterfront in Detroit means a variety of festivals in Hart Plaza near Cobo Hall. These include ethnic festivals featuring the music, arts, music and culture of different countries throughout the summer and fall. Hart Plaza also rings with the sounds of a variety of musical gatherings.
